Camden Aquarium

For a class trip my unit went to the Camden Aquarium. There were many different organisms there and many different environments. The organisms ranged from tiny fish to giant hippos, and everything in-between. Three things I learned from this trip are:

1. In the hippo’s environment there are special birds and fish who clean the hippo
2. There are penguins all over the world. The ones that we saw were from Africa.
3. Sharks range in all different sizes from under 69 lbs. to over 500 lbs.

Since we didn't have much time to explore all the exhibits there is still much to learn. Here are two things that I didn't learn at the aquarium:

1. A shark may grow over 20,000 teeth in its lifetime
2. The Lion’s Mane Jellyfish can grow up to 120 ft. long

Frog Dissection

In class we dissected frogs. This process helped us learn a lot about fogs and how they work. Three things I learned about the frog from this dissection are:

  • The liver is the largest organ in the body

  • The gallbladder looks like a little green sack

  • If you cut the stomach open some times you can find food inside it

Many people dissect frogs and they all find out different things about them. Two interesting fact I found online are:

  • the frogs tongue attaches on the front and flicks out to curl around the pray
  • the frog has teeth

My opinion about the dissection of the frog is that it was a good thing to do. This was a good hands of way to learn about the frogs inside and how it works.

Math Related to Child Soldiers?

One might think that math doesn't have anything to do with child soldiers or any other global issues, but they are wrong. Without math it would be hard to know the specifics on child soldiers. First of all, the average age of a child soldier is 15-18. With out math you wouldn't be able to figure this out, we would just half to guess. Math also comes out in child soldiers with all the percentages and statistics. In addition, sometimes the article only tells you some of the information and you have to figure out the rest. This is just like a math problem. As you can see math is everywhere, even in our research project. Add Image

Escaped Hippo

Who: A 2-ton hippo

What: The Hippo escaped from the zoo and authorities want to kill it.

Where: A private zoo in Montenegro

When: January 14,2010

Why: The hippo escaped from the zoo because there was a bad storm that flooded the zoo. The hippos tank overflowed and it was able to swim over the top of the tank. Authorities want to put the hippo to sleep because the hippo is the third largest land animal in Africa and they are very fast, smart, and extremely territorial.

Opinion:

I think that the article is very interesting. First of all the way the hippo escaped sows how smart these animals are. In addition, I don't think that they should put this animal to sleep. One reason I believe this is because if the animal is in the zoo it is probably tamed and not as dangerous. My opinion is that they should capture the animal and return him to the zoo when the water levels have gone down.
